Event Details

We're getting together to build programmers for microcontrollers. These will let you install your own firmware in chips.

Specifically, we'll be making Lady Ada's USBtinyISP. It works with Atmel's very popular AVR chips, including megaAVR (which Arduino is based on) and tinyAVR. The programmer is connected to a computer via USB, and is compatible with avrdude (free as in speech) and AVRstudio (free as in beer). On the chip/board end, it includes both 6- and 10- pin connectors; the latter allows you to power the chip from your computer (via USB) instead of needing a separate power suppy.

Note: This project doesn't include anything to program. If you have a microcontroller project (e.g. Game of Life kit) you might want to bring that (and a laptop or netbook) to play with. Besides that, everything you need will be provided; no experience is necessary.

If you have any of the following tools, they'll be handy:

  • Soldering iron, stand, and sponge
  • Solder
  • Diagonal wire cutters
  • Solder sucker

Registration ends Thursday, January 7th!
